Peniche is set to welcome the World Surf League (WSL) Tour for the 16th time, from March 15 to March 25, 2025. This marks the 22nd occasion that Portugal has hosted an event in the elite surfing circuit. The renowned Supertubos beach will play host to the third stage of the WSL World Tour, further solidifying Portugal's reputation as a premier surf destination.
Since 2009, Peniche has been the playground for some of the world's best surfers, attracting thousands of enthusiasts to its waves. The WSL emphasized that Peniche is currently the only European location on the World Tour, showcasing its significance in the global surfing scene. Despite interruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the event has been successfully held in other locations such as Figueira da Foz, Sintra, and Ericeira.
The popularity of the event is evident, with over 150,000 visitors flocking to Supertubos during the competition days. This enthusiasm reflects not only the high-quality waves but also the local cuisine and the warm hospitality of this charming coastal town.
Peniche's tubular waves and excellent conditions, applicable almost under any wind direction, have earned it recognition as a world-class surfing destination. Francisco Spínola, WSL's General Manager for Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, remarked, "This is one of the best waves in the world; it has incredible consistency, with great waves always rolling in. This region is truly fantastic."
In addition to Peniche, the 2025 WSL World Tour calendar will introduce exciting locations, including a stage in Abu Dhabi featuring the world's longest artificial wave, alongside the return of competitions at Snapper Rocks (Australia), Lower Trestles (USA), and Jeffreys Bay (South Africa). The WSL Finals will be held at Cloudbreak in Fiji.
The tour kicks off in Hawaii and will touch down in nine countries, comprising 11 events, capped off with finals day. Notably, the mid-season cut will take place after the seventh event in Margaret River, Australia, compared to the previous five events.
Ryan Crosby, WSL's Executive President, stated, "We crafted this calendar to include more events and a greater variety of locations." He added, "We've brought back some of the most sought-after stages, aligning the dates with ideal surfing windows to create more opportunities for quality surfing and a diverse array of waves."
As anticipation builds for the 2025 WSL Tour, Peniche stands ready to showcase the thrill and artistry of surfing once again, welcoming athletes and fans to its breathtaking shores.
